The pupillary response to light involves both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Dilatation in response to lowered illumination is accomplished by both the withdrawal of parasympathetic tone and an increase in sympathetic tone. Constriction in response to high light levels results from the converse pattern of neural traffic.
